It all started with a simple idea – an idea to instill a little twist to the classic Kerala style beef fry.
Well, who doesn’t love a good stir fried beef curry. I think you just can’t go wrong with it.
I love to cook some good food from scratch on weekends, and everyone just loves this dish. Tender pieces of beef cooked inspices, shallots, plus plenty of ground black pepper – you’ll definitely L.O.V.E. it.

- 4-5 shallots sliced
- 2 garlic cloves peeled and sliced

- ½ - 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 teaspoon crushed black peppercorns
- ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
- Salt to taste
- 1 sprig of curry leaves optional
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a wok or large frying pan or high heat. Add oil and swirl around to coat the sides of the wok.
- Add beef. Stir fry 2-3 minutes or until beef is browned and just cooked. Transfer to a plate. Stir fry beef in batches if needed. (Alternatively, you can cook the beef in a pressure cooker. Place beef alongside ½ cup water in the pressure cooker. Season with salt. Cook until 5-6 whistles)
- Heat 1 teaspoon oil in the wok over medium-high heat. Add mustard seeds and allow to splutter. Add shallots, and sauté, stirring occasionally, for 1-2 minutes or until browned. Add garlic and ginger. Sauté, stirring, for 1 minute or until fragrant.
- Add green chilies (if using). Sauté, stirring, for a few seconds. Add ground turmeric, ground coriander and red chili powder. Stir fry for few seconds.

Past I have tried beef few times and it never got more than average mark from even myself. Being a quintessential Syrian Christian mallu ,it's difficult for me to live without beef and apun's wife is just a budding cook.I have tried something similar in a restaurant last week and just bowled over the taste and flavour.
That is the reason why I decided to try this dish in this weekend.Hence I googled and landed up to your page. And I was really bowled over that mouth watering pic of that beef fry and the simple recipe encouraged me try.
And I followed religiously what you specified here line by line and end result was awesome(along with the ginger garlic paste I grinded the curry leaves also)..and my wife liked it too..i will try this again with small twists ?
Thanks a lot for sharing your twist with such simple steps ?

Thank you so much Anish for your kind words. Glad to know you and your wife liked it. And about the coconut slices - it was just a personal preference. 🙂

Re the beef pepper fry - if you haven't got a pressure cooker, what do you suggest?

You can cook this over stove top - just make sure you add more water! Hope this helps!
