Masala chaas. Love healthier drinks? Then this spiced yogurt based drink for a refreshing treat. Made using yogurt, this drink is spiked with the amazing flavors of ginger, green chilies, ground cumin and chat masala. It’s exceptionally delicious, and gets a flavor boost from classic herbs like coriander (cilantro) leaves and mint leaves.

Why I Love This Refreshing Drink

There are so many ways to add the nutritious yogurt to your diet: in breakfast smoothies and bowls, as a gorgeous sweet, or simply flavored with fruits. Let me tell you, there’s nothing like a refreshing drink on a summer day, but think yogurt in a drink. Apart from being nutritious, it’s also totally refreshing, loaded with flavor and downright delicious.

Let’s talk about chaas, in this case, masala chaas. The classic drink from the Indian subcontinent that’s made with yogurt. While yogurt, ginger and green chilies form the basic chaas, the masala version takes it up a notch with the very delicious addition of cumin, chaat masala, mint leaves and coriander (cilantro) leaves. Simply blend all the ingredients with a whisk or in the blender for smoother texture.

  • Ginger - Fresh ginger makes a delicious combo with yogurt.
  • Green chilies - For the spice kick.
  • Cumin and chaat masala - Adds the essential spices to this drink.

  • Salt - Black salt for the classic recipe, feel free to replace it with regular salt.

How To Make Masala Chaas

Whisk yogurt - Place yogurt in a bowl, and whisk it lightly to make thick, smooth drink.

Spice it up - Spice up the drink with fresh ginger, chopped green chilies, coriander (cilantro) and mint leaves, cumin and chaat masala. You can also add a little water for the pouring consistency.

Ingredients

  • 1¼ cup yogurt
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cm ginger grated
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves
  • 1 tablespoon chopped mint leaves
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon chaat masala
  • Salt, black or regular, to taste

Instructions

  • Place yogurt in a bowl. Whisk to break up the lumps.
  • Add water, ginger, green chili, coriander (cilantro) leaves, mint leaves, cumin and chaat masala.
  • Season with salt.
  • Whisk to combine.
  • Alternatively, you can blend all the ingredients in a blender.
