Inji thayir (Ginger raita). Creating a healthy, crowd pleasing accompaniment to your Indian meal couldn’t be easier. Ginger, the hero of this dish, adds a healthier touch and flavor to yogurt in the most delicious way. Nutritious and delicious!
One of the most important things about creating the best accompaniment is making sure it pairs well with the other major elements of the meal. When it comes to spicy Indian meals, a cooling accompaniment like raita is always favored, and you can easily customize it with veggies, fruits and even ginger.
Inji thayir or ginger raita. The invigorating, spicy smell of fresh ginger takes centerstage in this dish. The warming taste strikes a beautiful contrast with the cool yogurt. Although this traditional dish is a tasty addition to Onam feast (sadya), you can serve it with any Indian inspired meal.
How To Make Inji Thayir (Ginger Raita)
First, the yogurt. I prefer Greek style yogurt, but you can opt for your favorite thick yogurt. Again, both full fat and light varieties work well in this recipe.
Next, add ginger and green chilies. Make sure all the ingredients are finely chopped. Ginger is obviously the key ingredient in this recipe and green chilies are a great addition for heat. Don’t forget to season with salt.
Now, all you need to do is combine all the ingredients. Such a beautiful cooling raita.
Well, the traditional recipe for inji thayir is pretty straightforward, but there are tons of variations to this delicious raita. Chopped curry leaves also makes for a lip-smacking addition. Sautéing ginger in a little oil also tastes great. To elevate the flavor quotient, you can also stir in a simple tempering of mustard seeds and dried red chilies.
Absolutely delicious!
