It’s classic, it’s flavorful, and it certainly exudes utter deliciousness. I must admit, this sandwich is one of my absolute favorites. But, what’s the secret to the perfect ham sandwich? The bread, ham, spreads, cheese - all play their part to create this absolutely delish sandwich.
With frequent appearances on the menu, I have made this several times, and it always turns out to be a guaranteed winner. Well, how could it not? The layers of mayonnaise, mustard, perfectly flavored ham, and the cheesy goodness make it irresistibly good. And when paired with your favorite bread, it’s a classic turned all-time favorite.
Key Ingredients In The Perfect Ham And Cheese Sandwich
- Bread - Sourdough is my favorite option.
- Mayonnaise - The quintessential spread of ham sandwich.
- Dijon Mustard - Add a small amount for extra flavor kick.
- Ham - The more the better. Deli ham is the right option, but try with leftover ham during holidays.
- Cheese - Swiss cheese makes for the right combo with ham.
How To Make The Perfect Ham And Cheese Sandwich
Prep the ingredients - First, choose your bread and slice it into two equal halves. I have opted for leftover ham in this recipe, but deli style ham slices are also just perfect. When it comes to ham, the keyword here is “plenty”.
The two essential spreads you will need to make this sandwich include mayonnaise and dijon mustard. Add more or less depending on your taste. I made this as a leftover roast ham dish, but deli ham is a perfect addition. And finally, the cheese. Swiss is my first choice, but gruyere or cheddar also tastes amazing.
Assemble - Start with slathering one portion of bread generously with mayonnaise. Top slice of bread gets a generous coating of mayonnaise as well as dijon mustard. Then top the bottom bread with ham slices, cheese and optional pickles.
Grill - Grilling, either over the stovetop or in a grill plate, is totally optional, but I really love the crispy buttered part of buttered bread. The cheese will also melt making the sandwich extra scrumptious.
