To make the traditional casserole, you will only need 3 ingredients – green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and fried onions. I personally love this trio, but let’s add a few extra ingredients to make it phenomenal.
I love the addition of simple flavorful ingredients like garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and fresh or dried herbs when it comes to cooking at home. It literally makes the dish so delicious. This casserole is also easy to plan and make ahead, reducing your kitchen time on the big day. While it’s baking in the oven, you will get time to prep other dishes or set the table before your guests arrive.

- Green beans – Frozen or fresh green beans are perfect to make this casserole.
- Cream of mushroom soup – Store bought soup loaded with creamy mushrooms to save time.

How To Make Green Bean Casserole
Cook green beans – The first step in creating this dish is cooking green beans until they are tender. To do this, you can either blanch or steam them until tender crisp.
Make mushroom sauce – Start with sautéing onions with cream of mushroom and milk. Bring this to a simmer, and add thyme, garlic powder and cayenne pepper. Finally, stir in green beans.
Bake – Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish, and cover with aluminum foil. Remove the foil and top this with French fried onions before cooking in the oven until crisp.

Ingredients
French fried onions:
- 4 cups homemade or store bought fried onions
Green beans mixture:
- 800 g frozen or fresh green beans, tips removed
- 100 g butter
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 420 g cream of mushroom soup
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make French fried onions or use store bought. Set aside.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add green beans. Blanch for 3-4 minutes. Drain. Set aside.
- Melt butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Add onions. Sauté for 2-3 minutes or until soft.
- Add mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and dried thyme. Stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 3 minutes.
- Stir in green beans. Remove from heat.
- Add 1 cup French fried onions. Stir to combine.
- Transfer the mixture to a 9 x 13 - inch casserole dish or baking pan.
- Store this in the refrigerator overnight or cook straight away.
- Preheat oven to 200 C / 400 F.
- Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil, and bake for about 20 minutes.
- Remove foil.
- Top with the remaining French fried onions and bake for another 10 minutes.
- Serve as Thanksgiving side.
Notes
- Green beans - Canned green beans are a great no-cook alternative to frozen or fresh beans. Apart from blanching, steaming is also a great option to cook them. Whole or cut green beans can be used in this recipe.
- Butter - Substitute butter with oil if you like.
- Mushrooms - Sliced mushrooms are a great addition. Sauté them alongside onions.
- More topping ideas - Breadcrumbs, crushed potato chips, cracker crumbs.
