Indulge in a delicious experience with this rich yogurt based creamy dreamy dessert that never disappoints. Bonus – tips to make it healthier!
Yogurt is, in fact, a highly nutritious addition to your menu, and one of the best healthy ingredients to create a heavenly dessert. Without a doubt, it’s the right way to satisfy your sweet tooth with minimal calories.
Simply put, shrikhand is Indian style flavored yogurt and, of course, it’s a classic dessert served during the festive season. This yogurt is flavored with saffron and cardamom, and decorated with beautiful rose petals and chopped nuts. What an amazing dessert to add sweetness to any special occasion!
How To Make Shrikhand
First, the yogurt. The secret to making the best shrikhand lies in the type of yogurt you choose. I prefer Greek yogurt in this recipe, but if you want to use regular yogurt, you will need to plan ahead and strain the water from yogurt. See the notes below to learn about the process.
Saffron dissolved in a little warm milk brings in tons of flavor to this dessert. Apart from the amazing flavor, it also imparts a gorgeous orange hue to the dish. And it’s so cool!
To add sweetness, powdered sugar or icing sugar is the traditional choice. However, you can also add sugar substitutes like honey or maple syrup for a healthier version. Again, the amount of sugar you’ll need highly depends on your taste preferences.
Ground cardamom is an excellent addition to sweet dishes. The subtle spice balances the other beautiful flavors in shrikhand.
Looking for decadent variations? Here are a few ideas. Puréed fruits like strawberries, mangoes etc taste amazing in this dessert. If you love nuts, stir in your favorite chopped nuts. Absolutely delicious! And the garnishes definitely give it a festive touch making it the perfect holiday dessert.
I hope you love this shrikhand as much as I do!

- 8-10 saffron threads
- 2 tablespoons warm milk
- 500 g Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup powdered (icing) sugar (see notes)
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom (cardamom powder)
- Chopped nuts (pistachios, almonds), to garnish
- Rose petals, to garnish (optional)
Instructions
- To make saffron milk, combine together saffron threads and milk in a small bowl. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Place yogurt, saffron milk, sugar and cardamom in a large bowl. Whisk to combine.
- Divide yogurt among serving bowls. Place in the refrigerator for 3-5 hours or until set.

Notes
- If you are using regular yogurt, you will need to make hung curd. Place yogurt in a muslin cloth covering a sieve and set it over a bowl. Store in the refrigerator overnight. This way, you will get very thick hung curd to make shrikhand.
- Add your favorite fruit purée made with berries or mangoes to make fruity shrikhand
- Stir in plenty of chopped nuts if you like
- For sugar free dessert, replace sugar with honey and maple syrup
- You can make this a day ahead and store in the refrigerator
