Salty Canadian coffee. Forget everything you thought you knew about your morning coffee. This deliciously unexpected marriage of bold espresso, sweet maple syrup, creamy butter, and a delicate pinch of salt is usually served over ice with cold milk making it silky, aromatic, and just decadent enough to feel like a treat. It strikes a beautiful balance between rich and refreshing, and sweet and savory. The secret is in the details, quality coffee, real maple syrup and just enough salt to balance the deeper, caramel-like notes of brew.

Why I Love This Maple-Buttery Coffee
Part iced latte, part indulgent breakfast in a cup, this refreshing coffee brings together four unusual ingredients, espresso, maple syrup, butter and salt. With ice and cold milk completing the drink, it might sound like an unusual experiment to your favorite iced latte. Essentially, it’s the celebration of maple syrup, reimagined through the language of modern coffee culture. With pure maple syrup as the key ingredient, it’s a relatively new viral recipe rather than a long-established Canadian coffee tradition. I love the clever idea of incorporating the familiar combo of maple syrup and sea salt into the coffee cup. But, the addition of butter is pretty new.
Why put butter in coffee? The most important step in this recipe is emulsification. Hot espresso, soft cold butter, maple syrup , and salt undergoes vigorous frothing to create a glossy, aerated mixture to pour ice and milk. Make sure the butter is incorporated into the coffee mixture rather than sitting as an oily layer on the surface. Choosing the right coffee is also important for creating the perfect coffee. A good espresso balances the flavors of maple and butter.
Key Ingredients In Salty Canadian
- Espresso - From espresso machine or instant espresso.
- Maple syrup - Pure maple syrup, not maple-flavored syrup.
- Butter - Unsalted and cold.
- Sea salt - A tiny pinch.
- Milk - Cold.
How To Make Salty Canadian Coffee
Coffee mixture - You will need 1-2 shots of espresso to prep one cup of coffee. While the coffee is still piping hot, add maple syrup, butter, and salt. Froth the mixture for about 20 seconds. Make sure the butter is completely dissolved.
Finish with milk - In another glass, add ice and milk. Pour in espresso. Give it a gentle stir. The finished coffee should taste like coffee first, with subtle maple sweetness, a silky buttery texture, and just enough salt to make the flavors pop.
