Ingredients

  • 1 kg beef fillet cut into cubes
  • 1 onion finely sliced
  • 1 shallot roughly chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick
  • 3 - 4 cloves
  • 2 - 3 dried red chilies
  • 2 large green chilies cut in half
  • ½ cup coconut slices
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 3 tablespoon ground coriander
  • 3 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon chilly powder
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated black pepper
  • Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves cilantro to garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Place cubed beef, sliced onions, ginger garlic paste, green chilies, coconut slices, ground turmeric, ground coriander, garam masala, chilly powder, and enough salt. Mix well, cover the cooker, and pressure cook until the fifth or sixth whistle.
  • Wait until all the steam escapes before opening the cooker. Remove the lid, place the cooker over medium heat, and let it simmer until all water dries up.
  • In another pan, heat oil and splutter ½ teaspoon mustard seeds along with cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, red chilies, and curry leaves. Transfer cooked beef to the pan, and mix well. Check the seasoning at this stage, and add more salt if required. Also add freshly grated black pepper. Serve the spicy Kerala beef fry hot decorated with coriander leaves.
