If someone asks me, “Which is your favorite Kerala dish?” I won’t be able to give a single answer, but Kakkayirachi thoran (Cockle Meat/ Clam Stir Fry) would definitely secure a place somewhere on top of the list. Well… that explains my love for this dish.

Ingredients
- 200 g cockle meat or clams as they are called in some parts of the world, cleaned
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 1 1 shallot chopped
- ¼ tsp ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- ¼ teaspoon chilli powder optional
- ¼ teaspoon freshly grated black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic paste
- ¼ teaspoon ginger paste
- 4 tbsp desiccated coconut
- Curry Leaves
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan, and splutter mustard seeds.
- Fry onion until golden brown.
- Add garlic and ginger paste. Fry again.
- Add the spices – ground turmeric, ground coriander, black pepper, chilli powder, and garam masala. Fry them along with grated coconut.
- Throw in cleaned cockle meat and mix well.
- Cover and cook.
- Garnish with curry leaves and serve.
