French fried onions. Crunchy and delicious fried onions with extra addition of cajun seasoning to deepen the flavor. These crispy bites are an integral part of the iconic green bean casserole. Plus, they also make for an addicting snack, you just can’t stop munching on them.
French Fried Onions
When it comes to deep fried goodies, I think “ultimate crunch”. And that ultimate crunch is all about the perfect batter and the right oil temperature. Not only are they necessary to create the perfect crunch, but are also the key factors behind achieving the perfect soft inside. The technique of deep frying is pure classic, and it’s so versatile and customizable.
Whether you are gearing up for a gathering, or just want to make a crunchy snack, this version of fried onions is guaranteed to switch on the ‘unlimited snack’ mode – in the most delicious way, of course. I’m truly swooning over these light and crispy onions coated with the right amount of batter. Honestly, this may very well be one the best deep fried onions I’ve ever tasted. With a touch of classic cajun seasoning, these are guaranteed to be as flavorful as it is crispy.
Key Ingredients In French Fried Onions
- Brown onions – Peel and slice as thin as possible.
- Buttermilk – Mellows the flavor of onions.
- Flour – Alongside salt and pepper, this forms the outer coating of fried onions.
- Cajun seasoning – Optional addition to level up the flavor.
How To Make French Fried Onions
Prep onions – Brown onions are preferred in this recipe, however, white onions also taste great. Peel onions and slice them into very thin strips. If needed, you can use a mandolin slicer.
Soak onions – To mellow the flavor of the onions, you will need to soak the onion slices in buttermilk. It’s a quick process with an approximate soaking time of about 5 minutes.
Fry onions – Toss buttermilk soaked onions in flour and deep fry. To enhance the flavor, I like to mix the flour with cajun seasoning. Make sure the onion slices brown evenly adding to the crunch.
