Banana bites made with whole wheat flour. Can a snack get any better than this? I’m not calling them healthy, but at least there’s no refined flour in them. Locally, in Kerala, they are called banana bonda, a sweet snack made from bananas and flour.
I’ve done a couple of deep fried banana goodies for the blog already, but this is the very first time I’m combining deep frying with whole wheat flour. I was bit worried about ending up with rock hard banana bites. But to my surprise, bananas made them soft and tender inside, and crispy outside.
If you want to go with traditional version, replace whole wheat flour with plain flour. Serve these crispy, crunchy snack with a hot cup of tea. Perfect!
Peel and mash the banana.

Whole Wheat Banana Bites | Banana Bonda
Banana bites made with whole wheat flour.
Ingredients
- 1 large ripe banana
- ¾ cup whole wheat flour (atta)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ¼ teaspoon bicarb soda
- Oil for deep frying
- Water
Instructions
- Peel and mash banana. Place it in a large bowl along with flour, sugar, ground cardamom and bicarb soda. Add water ( I used ¼ cup water) little by little to make a very sticky dough.
- Meanwhile heat oil for deep frying in a deep pan over medium-high heat.
- Apply a little oil to the palm of your hand. Make a ball with the dough. When the oil is hot enough, slide it into the oil. Fry, turning occasionally , until golden brown. Repeat until dough is used up.
- Drain them on an absorbent towel.
- Serve hot bondas with tea or coffee.
Notes
Traditional bondas are made with plain flour or all-purpose flour. However, you can use wholemeal plain flour or whole wheat flour in the recipe
If the banana is not sweet enough, add more sugar
