Keema aloo literally translates to minced meat and potatoes. Minced meat is stir fried with lots of spices giving it a beautiful dark brown color. The potatoes are added to the browned minced meat and cooked until tender and soft. You can add more or less potatoes to make a simple, satisfying side. I love the fact that they are perfect for weeknight dinners as well as for your next gathering.
Keema Aloo Recipe
Cook keema or minced meat – Ground meat, lamb, beef or chicken, is the key ingredient of this recipe. You’ll need to sauté the meat in spices before adding in the potatoes. To do this, start with frying the onions until golden followed by sauteing ginger, garlic and green chilies. The spices in this recipe include ground turmeric, ground coriander and red chili powder. When you get a nice aroma, add tomato paste and fry with the spices. Next, you’ll need to add the minced meat. Let it cook for about 10 minutes to get that beautiful brown color.
Add aloo or potatoes – Potatoes are a great addition to this keema recipe in terms of both flavor and texture. Cook them with the minced meat. Once tender, you can add garam masala, yogurt and plenty of coriander (cilantro) leaves. Give this a quick stir fry!

Keema Aloo | Minced Meat With Potatoes
Keema or minced meat stir fried with aromatic spices and potatoes to make a delicious side!
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 cup chopped onions
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 green chili, chopped (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 500 g ground (minced) lamb or beef
- 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 tablespoon yogurt
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 cup chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves, to garnish
- Lemon wedges, to garnish (optional)
- Naan or rice, to serve
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add onions. Sauté, stirring occasionally, for about 2-3 minutes or until browned.
- Add ginger, garlic, and green chilies (if using). Sauté, stirring, for 2 minutes or until fragrant.
- Add ground turmeric, ground coriander, and red chili powder. Sauté, stirring, for about 40 seconds or until aromatic.
- Add tomato paste. Sauté, stirring, for about 2 minutes.
- Add ground (minced) meat. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, for about 10 minutes or until browned evenly.
- Add potatoes.
- Stir to combine.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
- Add yogurt, garam masala, and chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 3 minutes.
- Garnish with coriander (cilantro) leaves.
- Serve with naan or rice.
Notes
- You can add green peas if you like
- Tomato paste can be substituted with fresh tomatoes
