If someone asks me, “Which is your favorite Kerala dish?” I won’t be able to give a single answer, but Kakkayirachi thoran (Cockle Meat/ Clam Stir Fry) would definitely secure a place somewhere on top of the list. Well… that explains my love for this dish.

Ingredients
- 200 g cockle meat or clams as they are called in some parts of the world, cleaned
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 1 1 shallot chopped
- ¼ tsp ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- ¼ teaspoon chilli powder optional
- ¼ teaspoon freshly grated black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic paste
- ¼ teaspoon ginger paste
- 4 tbsp desiccated coconut
- Curry Leaves
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan, and splutter mustard seeds. Fry onion until golden brown. Add garlic and ginger paste. Fry again. Now you can add the spices – ground turmeric, ground coriander, black pepper, chilli powder, and garam masala. Fry them along with grated coconut. Throw in cleaned cockle meat and mix well. Cover and cook. Garnish with curry leaves and serve.
