Baked bbq chicken. Sweet, sticky, succulent and delicious, this baked version of bbq chicken is slathered with lip-smacking barbecue sauce. An incredibly delicious way to make bbq chicken all year round!
The beautiful sunny summer is synonymous with barbecues and outdoor gatherings. And one of my favorite ways to add more flavor to deliciously grilled meal is with a little help from homemade barbecue sauce. Furthermore, I’m going to bake with barbecue sauce so you can enjoy baked bbq chicken all year round.
I have also added a touch of spice rub to the chicken before slathering it with the sticky barbecue sauce. Together, they make for the ultimate lip-smacking lunch or dinner.
To make this delicious baked chicken, start with preparing the spice rub. It’s a simple mixture made with garlic powder, ground cumin, paprika and seasoning. The idea is to bake chicken first with the spice rub and then bbq sauce.
Coat the chicken in the spice rub and bake for about 25 minutes, then slather with bbq sauce and bake again for another 25 minutes or until cooked through. You can brush with more bbq sauce if you like.

Incredibly delicious and succulent bbq chicken made in the oven!
Ingredients
- 1 kg boneless chicken thighs (see notes)
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (homemade or store bought)
Spice rub:
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin (cumin powder)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200C / 400F. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Set aside.
- To make the spice rub, combine together garlic powder, ground cumin and paprika in a small bowl. Season with salt. Set aside.
- Arrange chicken thighs on the baking tray. Sprinkle with the spice rub.
- Coat chicken in the spice rub. Bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove chicken from oven. Brush with barbecue sauce on all sides.
- Set oven temperature to 250C or 425F. Bake for another 25 minutes or until cooked through.

- Cooking times may vary for bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
