Dahi toast. Healthy and flavorful toast loaded with cooling yogurt and your favorite vegetables. This delicious sandwich is finished with a light tempering or tadka of mustard seeds and curry leaves. Yum!
Dahi or yogurt may not be the first thing that springs to your mind when thinking about a sandwich. But trust me, adding a little creamy yogurt always brighten up your sandwiches and brings in a cool, refreshing touch.
Dahi toast, also known as dahi tadka sandwich or dahi sandwich, features vibrant vegetables tossed in spiced yogurt. The highlight of this sandwich is the flavorful and beautiful tadka or tempered spices.
How To Make Dahi Toast
The filling of this sandwich is a beautiful combination of yogurt with vibrant veggies like onions, carrots and bell peppers (capsicum). The best part? There’s no cooking involved. So make sure you chop all the veggies very finely. I have used Greek yogurt in this recipe, however, you can sub with any plain thick yogurt. The keyword here is “thick”. The yogurt needs to be very thick so you will get the right consistency. And the best choice is always Greek yogurt.
Now, if you don’t want to use Greek yogurt, regular hung yogurt will do the trick. Just place the yogurt in a muslin cloth in a strainer and place it in the refrigerator overnight. The excess water from yogurt will drain eventually leaving thick delicious yogurt.
Once you mix all the above ingredients together and season with salt and pepper, spread it on a thick slice of sourdough or your favorite bread.
Now the tadka or tempering. Heat up a little oil in a pan, and fry mustard seeds and a few curry leaves. Pop the sandwiches in the pan and toast both sides. It’s just like toasting your sandwich with butter, but a lot healthier and super flavorful.
Trust me, this dahi toast is the next level sandwich you need to try!

Ingredients
Sandwiches:
- 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup finely chopped bell peppers (capsicum)
- 1/2 cup chopped carrots
- 1/2 cup chopped onions
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes (red pepper flakes)
- 10 slices sourdough bread
- Salt and pepper to taste
Tempered spices:
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 sprig of curry leaves
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine together bell peppers (capsicum), carrots, onions and red chili flakes. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- Spread the yogurt mixture on one side of 5 slices of sourdough bread. Top with the remaining bread slices. Set aside.
- Meanwhile, heat oil in a small frying pan over medium-low heat. Add mustard seeds. Fry for 1 minute. Add curry leaves. Fry for 30 seconds.
- Place the sandwiches in the pan. Do not overcrowd the pan. When one side of sandwich turns crispy and golden, flip over to toast the other side.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- Hung yogurt is a great substitute for Greek yogurt. To make hung yogurt, place regular plain yogurt in a muslin cloth placed in a strainer. Set the strainer on a bowl and let the excess liquid from the yogurt drain into the bowl. The result is super thick and creamy yogurt.
- Substitute sourdough bread with your favorite bread if you like
