Kerala Prawns Fry

Kerala Prawns Fry

Usually I refrain from cooking prawns. It’s not that I hate them but because of the fact that cleaning them eats up an awful amount of valuable time. I know you’ll agree with me.

However, on the other side, I’d love some succulent fried prawns for dinner. And I’d prefer to buy fresh prawns with shells intact rather than the pre-cleaned ones. For some reason, they don’t look “fresh” to me. Having said that, you are welcome to use pre-cleaned prawns in this recipe.

Here is the recipe for very basic and super simple fried prawns:

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • ½ tsp ground turmeric
  • 2 tbsp chilly powder
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • ½ tsp garlic paste
  • ½ tsp ginger paste
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • ½ of 1 medium onion, sliced (optional)
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves (optional)
  • Oil for shallow frying the prawns

Cleaned prawns

Clean and devein the prawns. Place the cleaned prawns in a bowl.

marinate prawns

Marinate them with ground turmeric, chilly powder, ground coriander, ginger paste, garlic paste, and ground black pepper. Keep it covered in the refrigerator for 10 – 15 minutes.

Heat oil in a frying pan, and arrange the prawns in a single layer.

Fry Prwans

Shallow fry prawns until done. Throw in the sliced onions and curry leaves just before removing it from heat (Skip this step if you don’t like onions and curry leaves in fried prawns).
Give a quick stir.

Voila! It’s ready! Moist and succulent fried prawns.

Serve hot with rice or chappathi.
